FY13 Funding for Child Care: Urging the Administration to Make Child Care a Priority

As the end of the year draws near, in Washington, DC the federal agencies are making plans for FY2013, including important investments in the Child Care and Development Block Grant, our main child care law that drives licensing, quality, and assistance to low-income families.

The Administration needs to hear that we're counting on them to make a strong statement about the importance of child care in the next budget.

FY12 Funding for Child Care

Just in time for today's expiration of the Continuing Resolution, an agreement has been reached on FY2012 appropriations.

For child care and early learning, the agreement includes:

 Program

 Investment

Child Care and Development Block Grant  $60 million increase over FY2011
Head Start/Early Head Start  $424 million increase over FY2011
Race to the Top  $550 million, with an unspecified portion intended to go to an Early Learning Challenge
Title I (which can be used for preschool)  $60 million increase over FY2011

The increase for CCDBG is a significant win in this year that featured heated debates about the role of the federal government, debt ceilings and balanced budgets, a failed "Super Committee" effort, and a dismal outlook for investments for young children. Your continued advocacy about the role of child care in the economy has made a difference!
